For your Friday: A few fitness studio reviews!

Happy Friday, everyone!

This week seemed longer than most...who agrees with me?! I know I'm ready for the weekend, and luckily the weather is shaping up to be beaUUUUtiful! Hope the same's true for all of you out there ;-)

As I mentioned in a previous post, I bought a Classtivity Passport that gives me the opportunity to take 10 classes in participating fitness studios throughout the City for a mere $49. The catch is that I have to attend all classes within a month. Now, that might not sound too difficult, but when you work a lot of evenings and your commute is an hour+, it becomes necessary to employ some scheduling acrobatics. So far, I've taken classes that had me up before the sun (I'm not pretty before I've had my coffee) and home longgg after dark. I've gotten up for classes on the weekends earlier than I rise for work sometimes! But all jokes aside, I'm not complaining because I've gotten to check out tons of studios and classes that I never would have been able to otherwise. It's been fun, and I still have four more classes to take! What do you think? Krav Maga? Bhangra? Ballet?

While I decide, here are my reviews of come recent classes I took:

Pedal NYC: Disregarding the odd acronym (Physical Excellence Delivered Around Life), PEDAL NYC boasts an intimate, cozy studio. There's one workout room replete with free weights, foam rollers, kettlebells of all sizes, mats, and TRX cables suspended from the ceiling. It looked intimidating, but the class was anything but. Frankly, I was a little disappointed. I wanted it to be more challenging than it was. Now don't get me wrong: the core and upper-body work that we did while our feet were suspended in the TRX cables was tough. I think there just weren't enough rounds. The instructor didn't work us to exhaustion which is kind of what I've gotten used to in fitness classes. The kettlebell work was solid, but not strenuous. I enjoyed experimenting with different sized kettlebells though because I'm trying to get more comfortable with using them in my training. Overall, I'd give PEDAL a 3.5/5 stars.

Yoga Vida Greenwich Village: I loved everything about this class. The regular instructor was out so we were led by a sub who apparently had very big shoes to fill. In my humble opinion, she filled those shoes and then some! She eased us into our practice with an anecdotal story that I think all could relate to being the busy City folk that we are. Her cues were a little rushed, but I was able to follow along. I got some helpful hands-on alignment assistance, which is always appreciated. Class ended with a blissful savasana that carried me through the rest of my week. I'd give Yoda Vida a 4.5/5 stars.

Sacred Sounds Yoga: This yoga studio could not be situated in a more hectic, crazy part of town! Sandwiched between a bodega and a legendary jazz club, I'm surprised this little haven of zen has managed to make a space for itself! I may be surprised, but I'm sure glad it has. Sacred Sounds is an adorable studio with one serene practice room and tons of positive energy. I'm not sure what is was, but as soon as I walked into this studio, I felt calm and at peace. Upon entering the class, I was warmly welcomed by both the receptionist and the instructor, who introduced herself and asked if I had any injuries that she should know about. I always appreciate it when teachers take the time to seek out new students. It goes a long way in making us feel welcome in a new space when so many other studios come across as cliquey and elitist. I didn't get that vibe at Sacred Sounds at all. The class was a challenging vinyasa flow, incorporating some of the intermediate poses that I am always meaning to work on in my own practice. I give Sacred Sounds 5/5 stars.

That's all for now, folks! Stay tuned for a "sciencey" post and my tips to avoid diet/nutrition pitfalls. Enjoy your weekend :-)
