If you follow the trends in the fitness industry, you know that traditional cardio exercise has become the ugly stepchild of the fitness industry. When I say traditional cardio, I mean distance running, cycling, the elliptical trainer, etc...basically any exercise that is done for a sustained period of time at or around 60% of one's maximum heart rate.

The writing's on the wall! |
While "traditional" cardio isn't part of my routine any more, I'm not entirely convinced that it deserves the demonization its received lately. Just like I wrote in a previous post that you shouldn't do something if you don't like it, you shouldn't NOT do exercise that you enjoy because popular opinion says so. That being said, what, in the absence of "traditional" cardio, should you do?
If you agree with Jen Sinkler's sentiment, perhaps you'll
Lift Weights Faster.
If you enjoy the cardio machines, but want to shorten your workouts and elevate your heart rate to burn more fat, perhaps you'll incorporate intervals into your session. Pushing your heart rate up to 85-90% of the maximum heart rate can do wonders to improve your body's fat-burning potential.

Notice the final instruction... |
However, if you're really savvy, you'll look for a program that incorporates both the above. As far as I'm concerned, that program exists in the form of Metabolic Effect. Founded by brothers Drs. Keoni and Jade Teta, ME is a revolutionary fat-loss protocol that helps clients unlock their unique fat-loss potential by manipulating hormonal response though specific nutrition and exercise prescriptions. Based on the idea that folks fall into three general categories metabolically--sugar-, fat-, or mixed-burners--ME identifies specific exercise and nutritional plans to bolster the body's ability to burn fat.
The coolest thing about the program is that it's not a diet because it's not a one-size-fits-all solution. It assumes metabolic differences from one person to another, and therefore encourages folks to experiment with all the elements to help figure out what works and what doesn't in order to live a sustainable, fat-loss lifestyle.
I highly recommend the book,
"The Metabolic Effect Diet: Eat More, Work Out Less, and Actually Lose Weight While You Rest." Also, check out the
the YouTube channel, and of course,
the website!
