Why I chose to get certified with NASM

Happy hump day, ya'll! Hope you're making it a good week.

I want to take the time tonight to share with you all a few reasons why I decided to go with NASM (National Academy of Sports Medicine) for my PT certification. I thought it might be helpful for those of you who may be contemplating getting certified, and want a little "inside" information :-) While I'm only in the first week of my e-course, I do have some pretty strong opinions about the program and why it has so far been the right choice for me:

The cream of the crop for PT certifications

1. The OPT Model: The OPT Model is NASM's unique, science-based training program. It's been tested on real clients under the supervision of NASM-certified trainers, doctors, and other professionals. It is a systematic, progressive training program that, if correctly applied, can progress any client to any goal. The model focuses on three pillars that build on one another: stabilization, strength, and power. These pillars are broken up into phases to create a structure for developing a customized training plan.

2. There is a significant focus on client assessment in the course, which I find very useful and interesting. The attention paid to assessment is important because it brings the focus of training back to the client, their unique situation, their needs and their goals. I think reinforcing a client-centered model is important, a fitness trainers (from what I've observed) often view their clients as extensions of themselves and this can lead them to project their own preferences and goals on their clients, consciously or unconsciously.

3. The certification prepares you to work with many different clients/different populations. This is particularly important in this day and age when so many of the people in need of personal trainers are so unhealthy and in chronic pain as a result of their lifestyles.

4. The certification is affordable. I purchased an e-course package that includes a 60-day job guarantee. If I don't get a job within 60 days of passing the certification exam, the entire cost of the course is refunded to me. When I purchased, the company was offering $200 off select packages and the total tuition cost can be paid in 12 monthly installments with no interest. You just can't beat the value!

5. NASM's certification is the most highly-respected in the field. It's the most widely-accepted certification from gyms to health clubs to rehabilitation and physical therapy centers. A NASM PT certification will open a lot of doors.

As I progress through the program, I'll provide some more insight. Maybe my opinions will change, maybe they won't, but I'll always be honest with you guys ;-)

See ya soon!
